Stickam is Closed. What is next?

Stickam is Closed

This was the banner on the home page of Stickam when I visited it today, and my Reaction was like OMG, Stickam is Closed!! Why? It was kind of Shocking. If you see the Current stats It still holds Alexa Rank of 10K(approximately) and PR5. So why is it being closed? Any idea? No.

What was Stickam?

Well some of our readers might do not know that what exactly was Stickam? The answer is one line can be given as “A simple Video Website”. But actually it was beyond that. It was a “Live Streaming Video Website with both professional and user-generated content”.  This website was launched in February 2005 by Advanced Video Communications (AVC). It is now owned by Stickam Worldwide, Inc. Users could socialize with Video chat,Group chats or user advertisement options with it. The video chat option was not so famous due to many video chat clients but it was a great option for online Video Chatting without a Software. It also featured Go Live and Celebrity Live chats. Most of the Bands and Charity functions were also broadcasted using Stickam. Stickam was also being used for arranging live lectures for students which helped students to learn online.

Why Stickam is closed?

We have no official statement regarding why Stickam is closed. But if we evaluate the factors which led this and constant change occurred in the past few years one can easily figure it out. But the actual Factors might be different. Stickam was facing controversies from long time because of underage nudity and other cases. There were many cases which stated the children used to abuse and turn nude over cams. So it was obvious that this would have caught many citizen’s eyes. Also they recently launched Premium Membership offers that means they were facing some financial issues. There was a rumor around Internet that they needed $4 million to stay open, which was not confirmed by any sources. There is another possibility said that this site might have been bought out by a  bigger company like Google or YouTube. So buyer may keep this confidential until he/she wants to reveal to the Public. But the main Reason can be said is that children were doing things and they were provoked to do so which they should not be doing. So the very main reasons could be listed as.

  1. The Web site might be facing a tough Competition from its Competitors.
  2. The web site might be facing some Protest issues because of underage nudity.
  3. The website might be facing some Financial Issues.
  4. The website might have been bought out by a bigger Competitor and kept it Confidential.
  5. The website might have been blacklisted because many children were observed doing things, which they should not.

What is Next after Stickam?

Well possibly no one have anything yet that’s what is gonna happen after stickam is closed. If there is any possibility that it has been bought out by a bigger company then there might be a Hope that it will open with another name or with another company. Also there is quite a doubt about the Stickam alternatives that whether they will survive or not and if yes then How?

When Sticksm got Closed?

On January 31 2013 at 11;59 PM Stickam showed this Page saying that they will be unavailable to provide their services to the users. The following message is displayed at every page of Stickam now.

We were here. We did this. Actually YOU were here, and you did this. Stickam was always about you, not “about us,” like most websites.

After seven wonderful years we are incredibly sad to have to say goodbye. We did everything we could to keep this dream alive, but unfortunately you are reading this message.

When Stickam launched in 2005 we were the very first website devoted to live streaming, user generated video and chat. There was no blueprint, no roadmap to follow. We didn’t know where you would take us.

From the early days of the live community, “Stickam stars” started to emerge… Ibot, Gay God, Kiki Kannibal… Scene kids and scene bands… And then the wonderful Stu Stone and Jamie Kennedy and others came in, and the first regular, produced, live weekly shows on Stickam– the first on the Internet—began and flourished.

We started producing our own content from clubs and venues all over LA whenever we could. We launched our own weekly show Streaming The Cube to celebrate our community.

Daily and weekly shows from G4 TV, Andrew W.K., B-Real, Jake Fogelnest, DJ Rossstar, Allstar Weekend, Guys from Queens, Hank and Jim and so many others followed. We were privileged to present annual unprecedented live coverage of events like Vans Warped Tour, NATPE, SXSW and the Cinefamily telethons. We were honored to power six years of Myles Dyer’s incredible Stickaid and so many other worthy causes. We were also proud to produce and host “Stickam Live For Japan” to help raise money for victims of the tsunami with your help. So many community members came out to lend support to the broadcast that night at The Roxy, including Stu Stone, Cypress Hill, Black Veil Brides, Chantal Claret and James Urine, Mr. Let’s Paint TV, and Sam Proof, and so many more joined via remote.

Just late last year we launched the Stickam Studios at Meltdown with great friends and partners like TheOneRing.net, Iheartcomix, the NerdTerns and MeltCast. We were there for the special night with Die Antwoord and with Tavi Gevinson, and chats with Hollywood Undead and New Years Day and Escape The Fate. We continued to stream the cube.

The site will remain alive here until February 28, 2013. We encourage you to log in and download any of your live recordings or other media you wish to save.

We are incredibly grateful to all the Stickam members and viewers, to all the bands and artists, the radio stations and the shows, and the deer. Thank you for making this a wonderful place for seven years. Thank you all. We will miss you!

Sincerely,

Your friends at Stickam

This explains that they will keep the Web site online for the users who have uploaded their videos before, so they can take a Backup of their media.

Stickam was constantly in the controversies because of its nudity and other stuff, some people say that if they would have controlled their administration according to the censors they might have survived. Don’t know what could have happened but this certainly shocked many among us.
